We celebrated Independence Day at Watters Creek as the Allen Philharmonic Winds, with Conductor Dr. Philip Obado, presented a lively mixture of marches and classic patriotic melodies.

Freddie Jones, trumpet player for the Dallas Cowboys, opened the concert with the National Anthem.

There was family-friendly activities, and even a Duck Derby.

Musical selections for this concert featured Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs, Set 1, showcasing the Allen Symphony Chorus:
– Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, his orchestral work featured dazzling orchestration based on the work The Arabian Nights
– Guest artist, pianist Xuesha Hu, 2016 Grand prize winner of the Young Texas Artist Competition.

With a spontaneous vibrant personality and communicative artistry, 24-year-old pianist Xuesha Hu won first prize in the 8th Bosendorfer and Yamaha USASU International Piano Competition on January 8, 2017 in Phoenix Arizona; first prize in piano in the 32nd Young Texas Artists Competition in March 2016 in Conroe, Texas; first prize both in the 2013 53rd Jefferson International Concerto Competition, Colorado, as well as the 2013 Lennox Piano Competition in Dallas, Texas. We were delighted to have her on the stage performing Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

The Allen Philharmonic provided the music for the Allen Civic Ballet’s annual production of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. We all enjoyed our favorite numbers from the ballet while watching some of the area’s most promising young dancers depict the story of Clara saving the life of her Nutcracker Prince.

Our Christmas program featured carols by the timeless English composer, John Rutter, performed by the Allen Symphony Chorus and musicians from the Allen Philharmonic. Among the works performed: Angels Carol, What Sweeter Music, Star Carol, and Candlelight Carol. What a celebration of the season with these seasonal favorites!

 

Halloween Hauntcert

Lowery Freshman Center Auditorium

A family-friendly evening of spooky music and Halloween favorites. The program included music from Ghostbusters, Harry Potter, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and the classical Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saens. We even performed Michael Jackson’s Thriller, complete with zombie dancers!

We had a great fall carnival, complete with pumpkin decorating crafts, a photo booth with everybody’s favorite cold-weather princess, and a costume contest!
