About the event
We celebrate our community’s diverse population as we highlight the music of Vietnamese and Vietnamese American composers and artist.
Raised and risen from the ashes of a brutal war, a young generation of Viet-American composers and artists take up the torch to bring Vietnamese orchestral and choral music forward. Western musical traditions are a relatively new phenomenon in Vietnamese society. Arriving with the French in the late 19th century, it was popularized in the 1930s by a wave of Vietnamese singers and songwriters. The music in this program is an attempt to tell for the first time the story of the Vietnamese diaspora experience through sounds – from the traditional monocord to the harp, from classical sopranos to a 21st century choir. It is a story about war and peace, about love and loss, about destruction and survival. But most of all, it’s about the human spirit and our inexhaustible quest for freedom.
Come enjoy major works by renowned Vietnamese composer Lê Văn Khoa and Grammy Award winner Sangeeta Kaur, and many more!
